Do mass spectrometry imaging ion sources need matrix spraying? What matrix-free imaging ion sources are there?

MALDI relies on an organic matrix for energy absorption and ionization and must be sprayed; LDPI uses laser desorption plus photoionization, DESI uses electrospray impact desorption, and DPI uses electrospray plus photoionization—none of them depend on an organic matrix.
